Finding Mindfulness in Scary Places

Meditation is the practise of turning your attention away from distracting thoughts and focusing on the present moment, and several recent studies are touting the immeasurable benefits of clearing your mind to boost your mindfulness, health, happiness and even success.

I’ve practised meditation and mindfulness for years, but I have to say it’s not always easy to come by. It’s an elusive thing, really. And it takes practise and a fair amount of patience. So on those days I simply don’t have time to devote to those moments of silence and reflection I do something different: I climb.  And friends, I like to climb BIG. The mythical Arizona mountains have become my playground and I truly believe traversing those walls is the best medicine I’ve ever dispensed to myself. The work – and its work, believe me – has helped me push past my fears because I’m forced to be totally in the moment (hello, mindfulness!). It’s about being alive, and knowing you are in complete control of your mind, your body and your soul. It’s hugely addicting, so much so my entire family does it on the regular.

Now, climbing these magic mountains may not be for you exactly, and that’s OK. What I’m encouraging is that you do find something that challenges you in a way that scares you – just a little. I think you’d be amazed at the results. Life is for the living, right!
