Wedding Day Makeup Tips

Now that you have your dress sorted, what are your plans for your wedding makeup?

Regardless of your budget, you want to look flawless on your wedding day: for the imminent pictures, for your husband-to-be and, most importantly, so you can feel confident and feel like you

In most cases, I’d follow this one, simple rule: less is best. Simplicity speaks volumes, and to me nothing is more beautiful than a fresh, understated look that has a subtle sophistication.

 Start with your skin

Amp up your skincare routine three-to-six months ahead so you can ensure your skin is ready for your big day. Your skin is your base, so the healthier it is leading up to your wedding, the better your makeup will look and stay on your skin throughout the day.

I wouldn’t recommend doing something that’s radically different from what you normally do in your routine, but perhaps you consider a few extra facials or skin treatments that will boost your skin’s natural beauty.

Have a trial. Have many trials.

Book your makeup trial four weeks before your wedding to do a test-run on the different looks you would like to try. This is an opportune time to have some fun! Bring tear sheets from magazines or examples you may find on Pinterest of some wedding looks you love. That way, your stylist understands what you’re looking for.

Plus, make sure your hair is done and you’re wearing whatever jewelry you plan on wearing, so you can get a total picture of how the look will come together on the day.

 Don’t rush it!

Wedding days are hectic as it is, so take your time with your hair and makeup so you can really relax. This may be the only time you have to yourself, so enjoy the experience.

At the very least, allow for 45 minutes to an hour for make-up application and also show up with your skin clean, exfoliated and hydrated (drink plenty of water!) so you can achieve a flawless application. Also: don’t forget to wear a button down top so you can whip it off easily without ruining your face.

  Colour is key

Most brides don’t think about this, but bridal makeup needs to have some colour to compensate for your white wedding dress. In saying that, don’t go overboard here. This is not the time for a big smoky eye or coloured eye liners!

By colour, I mean a highlighter added to cheeks and lips to give off a luminous glow. Stick to classic, natural looks over anything that’s overly trendy or heavy-handed.

Bring a few products with you

Pack your little clutch with a few basics: blotting papers, powder, lipstick and concealer so you can have a quick touch-up if you need it. It’s a long day!
