What’s Trending Now: Tropics

The tropical colours incorporated in this room gives the room a calm and relaxing feel.

Interior design often takes its cues from the world of fashion and this year was no exception with tropical prints #trending on the runways of Marc Jacobs, Ungaro and now your home décor. From palm tree and pineapple motifs to terracotta and rattan textures, the look does embrace bold prints and colours, but it’s not brash. Think more ‘70s Palm Springs vibes, less Golden Girls kitsch.

Just like fashion, interior design is all about how it makes you feel. When you put on a pretty dress you feel beautiful; it’s the same sentiment with how you dress up your home. It should be a positive, emotional experience, but also recognize trends are fleeting so just like your personal style, don’t become a victim to it. Make a few tweaks in colour, wallpapers and prints to give the look some play in your space without going too overboard. The Bahamas, this isn’t!

YES to colours:

Indigo Throw Pillows
From Crate and Barrel

Indigo blue, mango, coral and tangerine orange will give you that pop of Caribbean colour. Throw pillows, lamps, picture frames or funky throws can be the perfect vessels for this.

YES to wallpaper prints:

Wallpaper is a bigger commitment, but don’t be frightened of going so bold with prints, whether you follow the tropic theme (think banana leaves) or florals. You can make a sophisticated statement as long as you stay somewhat strict about it: Less is more in this case as the look can be intensive. My favourite room to try this trend is in a powder room, a library or small entryway. It can be extraordinary and reminds me of an abode in a Paris arrondissement.

Florals are always a wonderful option

Also grass cloth: I absolutely adore grass cloth! The texture is a safer, calmer way to work with wallpaper without the “What was I thinking?!” regret afterwards. It’s timeless and you’re going to be able to live with it longer.

YES to tropic flora:

Parlor Palm

This is by far the easiest (and most economical) way to create a lush landscape in your home. Opt for big-leaved perennials, parlor palms or ferns.

NO to faux flamingos:

Or parrots or Tiki glassware or anything that takes this trend so far to the right it becomes tragic. Small touches, that’s the message!
